BIOGRAPHY
Davi Yun, the founder of Defining, has built a career as a designer at Samsung Electronics. He awarded the ‘Samsung Award of Honor’ as Samsung’s chief designer and creative director, and is one of the most influential designers in Samsung Electronics’ IT & Mobile business field.
He grew up in an open environment about art and culture under the influence of his father, who was an architect. His parents, who discovered his aesthetic potential early on, provided support and encouragement from childhood, including exposure to various artistic environments, whose aesthetic experiences greatly influenced his growth as a designer. And after elementary school when he was really into assembling Plastic model, he produced excellent results in graphic communication work such as posters in middle school and high school. He later majored in industrial design at Kookmin University, which has an international reputation in design, before joining Samsung’s design center in 1996.
Davi Yun, as the creative director of the Samsung PC business division, which reaches the scale of approximately 8 trillion Won, directed the overall design strategy, advanced design, archetype design and line-up design and, as the board member of Prior Design Identity Committee, plays the core role in the design strategy and the identity establishment project. He is almost the only designer in Samsung who designed every products of IT & Mobile fields including Note PCs, which includes the ‘Series 9’ that was nominated the world’s best Note PC by the US Consumer Report, tablets, smart phones, PDAs and all-in-one PCs, monitors, and printers. Today, the products designed by him and his team are selling in 145 countries in the world.
Davi Yun was laurelled Samsung Award of Honor, the most honorable award as a Samsung-person, in 2011. The award that was on behalf of designs field was awarded by Chairman KunheeLee of Samsung Group himself. He also won awards from internationally prestigious design awards including the three major design awards, IDEA(US), IF(Germany), and Red-Dot(Germany), and others as DFA(Hong Kong), ADA(Australia), and Good Design(Japan). Moreover, being acknowledged for his contribution to the development of Korean design, he has received major governmental awards from the Prime Minister, the Knowledge and Economy Minister and the Public Procurement Service Administrator, as well as from agencies, such as Ministry of Commerce Industry and Energy.
At present, he is expanding his interest as a designer from consumer home electronics such as IT, home electronics, and AV to the whole lifestyle that embraces furniture, food, video, interior, and construction. Also, as a designer working based on Asia, he is under a private research of national concepts of beauty of Eastern Asia such as Korea, China, and Japan. His sincere attitude towards human, faith in design, insight that reads the era, understanding of production technology, and broad human network are powerful assets that allow such an expansion. From 2015, he is teaching students in a design special education organization founded by Samsung, SADI(Samsung Art & Design Institute), yet again expanding his assets and experience.
Davi Yun currently lives in Seoul with her wife and two children. He is living in Seoul, the mega city of international scale where it is recently known for one of the most trendy cities in the world, and he closely scans changes in global lifestyle and aesthetics while expanding his work and experience as a designer into the world.
